Burn Injuries Overview
The pain and agony associated with burn injuries is indescribable.  Each year, nearly 18,000 people will sustain excruciating burn injuries.  Burn injuries can leave victims permanently scarred and in some cases, can even cause wrongful death.  Victims of serious burn injuries must contend with a great deal physical pain, suffering, and limitations.

A burn is defined as tissue damage caused by exposure to heat or chemicals.  While some burn injuries heal over time, others leave lasting physical symptoms that require continual medical treatment from surgeons, physicians, physical therapists, and medications.  Without proper medical attention, burn injury victims can incur more complex physical damages over time.

Types of Burns
There are three types of burns:  chemical burns, electrical burns, and thermal burns

Chemical burns result from the conversion of chemical energy to thermal energy.  Most chemical burns result from skin exposure to agents such as acid or phosphorous.  Usually, the severity of the chemical burn will depend upon the amount of time the skin was in contact with the chemical.  Sometimes, immediate contact with water can lessen the burn, but not always.

Electrical burns result from electrical currents that come in contact with the body.  Electrical current can burn the energy exit points of the body, such as skin, muscles, and tissue.  If the electrical current is strong enough, it may also cause the victim to have a sudden heart attack.

Thermal burns result from skin exposure to heat sources such as fire or the sun.  Of all types of burns, thermal burns tend to be the most common.  Thermal burns attack the various layers of skin and can even penetrate through muscle, tissue, and bone.  Burns of this nature can lead to permanent scarring, nerve damage, and loss of sensitivity.
